What Is Backpacking?

Backpacking is a cost-effective way to explore and experience the world. It is best suited for travel to multiple destinations. A backpacker would rather experience a range of environments and culture, rather than staying in one place.

Often customers ask for help with backpacks.  One of the first questions we ask is what their vision of backpacking is.  It can be simplified into two groups.  It’s either backpacks a luggage or backpacks for carrying camping gear.

It is important to know the difference because packs for travel will be more airline friendly.  The harness can be stowed when checking the luggage. For this type of traveler, backpacking often entails meeting locals, experiencing local food and culture, and finding new adventures in every place they go. Lodging is usually hotels or hostels.

Some backpackers want to stay off the beaten path. Even trails that offer a more wild experience.  They often stay in inexpensive lodgings or even sleeping in a tent. All their necessary possessions are carried in their backpack. This can include shelter and cooking equipment. So they are always ready for a change in plans.

How to Go Backpacking

Backpacking for beginners should always start small. You may not want to travel through 5 European countries or an entire long distance trail system for your first backpacking trip, but rather, stay local.

Opting for a short excursion that’s close to home is a great place to start. It’s always a good idea to go with a friend as backpacking alone isn’t always safe.

Let’s take a look at those 4 tips for safe backpacking whether it is for travel through cities or trail!

1. Pack the Essentials

Don’t rush out the door without making sure you have everything you need for your backpacking trip. On the other hand, don’t carry more than you need.  When you pack is on your back, you don’t want to carry unnecessary weight.

The essentials for the backcountry backpacker are:

  1. Map & Compass (optional: supplement with GPS)
  2. Headlamp/flashlight
  3. Adequate water (consider water treatment)
  4. Sunglasses, sunscreen and insect repellant
  5. Adequate food
  6. Adequate clothes (Dress in layers)
  7. First aid kit
  8. Fire starting materials
  9. Knife
  10. Shelter

The essentials for a traveler to other countries are not much different:

  1. Itinerary
  2. Headlamp/flashlight
  3. Sunglasses, sunscreen and insect repellant
  4. Adequate clothes (Dress in layers)
  5. Personal medications and toiletries
  6. Money belt or neck wallet (To secure valuables from pick pockets)

2. Know the specifics of where you travel

If you are backcountry backpacking, know the environmental climate and hazards of your route.  Be prepared with any equipment needed.  Be familiar with potentially dangerous plants and animals you may encounter.

When traveling, learn as much as you can about the culture and ways of the people you will most certainly meet.  Look to be a respectful guest in their country.

3. Wear the Right Clothing

Make sure you check temperatures, take elevation changes into account, and wear appropriate, comfortable clothing for your backpacking adventure. Pack extra clothes and be prepared for rain or other unexpected changes in weather.

4. Prepare Days Beforehand

Layout your clothing and gear days before your trip so that you have ample time to determine whether you’re missing anything. Map out your route and make sure you have sufficient navigation tools.

Go with a friend, or, at the very least, make sure someone else knows where you’ll be and can track you.

Remember that just because you have extra space in your backpack doesn’t mean you should use it to pack unnecessary items!
