At Bill Jackson’s Shop for Adventure, we’re more than an outdoor retail store. We strive to educate our customers about the pursuits and gear they are interested in, and our experienced staff is ready to outfit them so they can explore fabulous Florida and beyond.

Fishing

Fly-Casting Class

Upcoming dates: Feb. 24, March 10, March 24

When: 10 am on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month. Classes may range up to 1 1/2 hours in length.

Cost: $25 per person, or free with purchase of a rod and reel combo of $100 or more.

Learn the basics of fly-casting with one of Bill Jackson’s instructors, and experience the thrill of enticing and catching fish in a whole new way. Class size is limited to six casters, so reservations are required.

Note: We are still offering private fly-casting instruction, which requires a reservation. The cost for this program is $78 for the first person and $25 for each additional person. Contact the Fishing Shack at 727-576-4169.

Fly Tying Class

Upcoming dates: Feb. 19, March 5, March 19

When: 6-8 pm on first and third Mondays of the month, unless noted.

Cost: Free for instruction; class supply fee ranges from $6 to $15.

Join us for our Saltwater Fly Tying Class. We’ll show you how to tie all of the flies that catch fish in the Tampa Bay area. Bring some basic fly-tying skills and a beverage of your choice, then enjoy an informal instructional setting. Our staff is here to help you get started and assist you in developing your own style and hone your skills.

Gun Shop

Two-Day Concealed Weapons Course for the Novice

Upcoming dates: Feb. 21-22

When: 5–8:30 pm on Feb. 21; 5–8:30 pm on Feb. 22

Cost: $125

Note: This course is split over two evenings, instead of being a one-day course.

Bill Jackson’s Concealed Weapons Course for the Novice is designed for the novice shooter over 21 to help you become familiar with the basics of handgun safety, handling and to gain confidence in your shooting, as well as meeting the requirements for your Concealed Weapons license. The course is taught by one or more of Bill Jackson’s 5 NRA-certified instructors and, upon completion, you will receive a certificate recognized by the State of Florida to apply for the Concealed Weapons license.

Handgun Skills Development Course

Upcoming dates: March 17

When: 10:30 am-3:30 pm

Cost: $150

This class is designed to be the next step for the students who have completed Bill Jackson’s Concealed Weapons Course for the Novice and wish to gain skill, confidence and familiarity with their own firearm. Students will learn several practical shooting skills and drills to optimize range practices, including reloads, quick sight acquisition, double taps, one-hand shooting and more.

In order to be competent in your shooting/defense, you must provide your own firearm for this class.

Prerequisite: Bill Jackson’s Concealed Weapons Course for the Novice

Required materials: Firearm, two magazines, 100 rounds of approved factory ammunition*, snap caps, course target pack

* Approved factory ammunition: American Eagle, Blazer Brass, Speer Lawman, Sig

Recommended materials: Speedloader, Handi-Racker

Concealed Weapons Course for the Novice – Ladies Only

When: 9:30 am–5:30 pm

Cost: $125

Bill Jackson’s Firearm Safety Course for Women is designed for the novice shooter over 21 to help you become familiar with the basics of handgun safety, handling and to gain confidence in your shooting, as well as meeting the requirements for your Concealed Weapons license. The course is taught by one or more of Bill Jackson’s 5 NRA-certified instructors and, upon completion, you will receive a certificate recognized by the State of Florida to apply for the Concealed Weapons license.

Handgun Caliber Familiarization Class, Saturdays

When: 3-5:30 pm

Cost: $65; Graduate of Bill Jackson’s Gun Class $45. Includes: Classroom, range use, use of handguns, and ammo.

Participants will get the feel of various calibers of ammunition. They will fire five (5) rounds each of 380, 9mm, 38 Special Airweight, 38 Special Heavier Frame, 40 S&W, and 45 ACP.

Kayaking

Introduction to Kayaking

Upcoming dates: Feb. 24, March 24, April 21, May 26

When: 10:30 am. Class length can run 2 1/2 to 3 hours.

Cost: $78 per person, or free with purchase of a kayak at Bill Jackson’s.

This class is designed for beginning paddlers who would like to learn the fundamental techniques of kayaking. This fun and informative class can be taken either in a sit-on-top or sit-inside kayak. Instruction takes place in our indoor heated pool and on the lake behind our shop. Class participants will learn how to get into and out of a kayak, deep-water entries and exits, paddling techniques and strokes.

Bring a towel, closed-toe shoes and clothes you can get wet. There is a minimum age of 10 years old and he/she must be accompanied by a parent (or a legal guardian).

Paddleboards

Stand-Up Paddleboard Class

Upcoming dates: March 3, March 17, April 7, April 21, May 5, May 19

When: 9:45 am on the first and third Saturdays of the month, unless noted.

Cost: Free.

Paddleboarding remains one of the fastest growing watersports in the country. Find out why everyone is taking to the water for adventures on lakes, rivers, and oceans. Join us to learn the basics of getting up on a board, the strokes and the different styles of boards available. All you need to bring is clothes and footwear to get wet in, a towel and sun protection. We’ll take care of the rest.

Scuba Diving

Nitrox Class

Upcoming dates: Feb. 27 & March 1; March 13 & 15; April 24 & 26

When: 6-9:30 pm.

Cost: $125, plus $49.95 for books.

This two-session course is designed for the open-water diver who wants to take his or her diving to the next level through the use of a better breathing gas. Enriched Air Nitrox (EAN) allows the diver to have longer bottom times, shorter surface intervals, a lower risk of the bends and reduces post-dive fatigue.

Basic Open Water Scuba Diver Class Mondays & Wednesdays

When: 6-9:30 pm; classes meet each Monday and Wednesday for four consecutive weeks.

Cost: $350, plus $59.95 for books, plus open water dive fees (varies).

Store founder Bill Jackson was a pioneer in teaching the sport of scuba diving to recreational divers after World War II. His tradition of safe instruction continues today. This course is designed for those interested in basic open water diver certification. Classes meet at Bill Jackson’s indoor swimming pool. Each course includes a set of open water dives.

Basic Open Water Diver with Nitrox

When: 6-9:30 pm

Cost: $450, plus $99.95 for books, plus open water dive fees (varies).

This course is designed for those interested in basic open water diver certification. Classes meet for five consecutive weeks, each of those nights at Bill Jackson’s indoor swimming pool. Each course includes a set of open water dives.

This class also will include instruction in Nitrox, designed for the open water diver who wants to take his or her diving to the next level by utilizing a better breathing gas.

Try Scuba Class

Upcoming dates: March 14, April 11

When: 7 pm

Cost: $10

The Bill Jackson’s Try Scuba class is a one-hour session designed to introduce interested persons to the sport of scuba diving so they can then determine if they want to pursue the scuba diving certifications. Bill Jackson’s staff members will demonstrate how to use the different kinds of scuba diving equipment and guide participants through the basics. Participants will then be allowed to get in our indoor pool, put on the scuba gear and get a acquainted with one of the most popular water sports in Florida.

Participants should bring a swim suit (or whatever you feel comfortable getting wet in) and a towel.

Basic Open Water Scuba Diver Class Mon., Wed., Fri. for Two Weeks

When: 6-9:30 pm; classes meet Monday, Wednesday and Friday for two consecutive weeks.

Cost: $350, plus $59.95 for books, plus open water dive fees (varies).

Advanced SCUBA Diver course

Upcoming dates: TBA

When: 6-9:30 pm

Cost: $299 (includes classroom and in-water instruction at Bill Jackson’s; guided dives at predetermined locations); plus Advanced Diver textbook: $54.95.

Ready to take your skills to the next level and advance your SCUBA diving certification? Want to progress into specialty diving, such as Deep Diving, Drift Diving, and/or Night Diving? This is the class for you.

This continuing education program consists of three classroom/pool dates, and two open water dive dates.

Students must be at least 15 years of age; physically and mentally fit to perform difficult and challenging dives; have at least 25 logged dives or prior approval of dive instructor.

Students are required to provide ALL of their own scuba gear for this class, including but not limited to: lights, surface markers, regulators, tanks, buoyancy compensator, gloves, exposure suit, line cutter, weights, MFS). Nitro strongly recommended. Gear may be rented for additional cost.

Snow Skiing

Ski Instruction

Upcoming dates: Ongoing during ski season.

When: By appointment; call the Ski Shop at 727-576-4169 for details or to sign up.

Cost: Fees include skis and boots during your session. Students must be at least 100 pounds to get on our ski deck.

One-hour private session: $78
One-hour, two-person session: $98
Package of three, one-hour private sessions: $210
Package of three, one-hour, two-person sessions: $220
Don’t waste valuable mountain time. Learn the basics on our indoor, carpeted slope. During your ski lesson, you will learn the following manuevers: steer pressure edge, balance, slip sliding, athletic stance, wedge Christie turn, wedge turns, side stepping, pole plant, recovery from a fall, parallel turns, wedge speed control.
