Suncoast Chapter, Florida Trail Association Meetup

Hear the story of Emma “Grandma” Gatewood, the first woman to hike the entire Appalachian Trail, from local writer Ben Montgomery, as he discusses his book Grandma Gatewood’s Walk: The Inspiring Story of the Woman Who Saved the Appalachian Trail. Montgomery will speak during the May meetup of the Suncoast Chapter of the Florida Trail Association at 7 pm on Monday, May 16.

Gatewood emerged as a hiking celebrity when she became the first woman to hike the entire Appalachian Trail alone in 1955. Later she became the first person—man or woman—to walk it more than once. Her celebrity status brought public attention to the Trail and she became an advocate its restoration.
